Flightseeing

An air tour through Katmai Country - Victoria McCurley photoKatmai country is far from the Alaska highway system and it is filled with spectacular natural landscapes, historical sites and wildlife. While flightseeing adventures can be scheduled, each day flying out from the lodge for fishing, wildlife viewing and adventure activities is an awe-inspiring adventure in itself.

The nearby Alaska Peninsula Mountains have dormant volcanoes, interesting geologic formations and glaciers. Massive glaciers covered the entire area in ancient times and evidence of their passing lie everywhere. The original reason for Katmai National Park's founding was the desire to protect the area surrounding the Novarupta Volcano on Mount Katmai, which last erupted in 1912. This area includes the magnificent Valley of 10,000 Smokes, which is a 20-minute flight from the Lodge.

Aleuts and Eskimos have lived in the region for thousands of years. While their present-day villages are built upon the villages of their ancestors, there are hundreds of ancient village sites easily seen by air. Commercial fishing has been an important part of the local economy for over a hundred years, and as river courses and economic times have shifted, canneries have been abandoned, some the size of small cities.

Bear, moose, caribou and other large game can be seen any given day.
